Phoenix started working with the CRA in January 2020 as a telephone agent. He has also served as communications coordinator for the CRA's LGBTQ2+ Network since September 2020 and is currently co-chair of the Public Service Pride Network's Pride Season Action Committee.
He is an alumnus of McMaster University with an MA in Human Geography (2018) and published works on accommodating caregivers in the workplace, the benefits and drawbacks of secondary suites as part of the rental housing market, and the importance of access to blue spaces as therapeutic landscapes. He has extensive teaching and communications experience from various work and volunteer roles, including three years of hosting a community radio show about local organizations and events.
Phoenix is passionate about mutual aid initiatives, creating art for joy rather than mastery, and curiosity-driven learning. He believes that unions are essential for protecting and advancing worker's rights -- and that we have a duty to grasp the hands of others in our community regardless of their ability to work and raise them up alongside us.
“There have been times, lately, when I dearly wished that I could change the past. Well, I can’t, but I can change the present, so that when it becomes the past it will turn out to be a past worth having.” - Terry Pratchett
